Work In Progress

Since I have a fairly busy work day today I thought it would be a better idea to post now. I think the moment I get home will be bed time. For this week it's just a page from my sketchbook and a few rough drafts for my collage-in-progress. I'll try to get most of them done by next week. Maybe i'll put a few photos up of the progression.

Blogging

I thought for today's post it would be a good idea to explain why it's important to post. It's always easy to start out posting on the same day for a few weeks straight but it's keeping up with it thats difficult. Sometimes I really want to just skip a week but I know that if I do i'll skip the following week. So for those "blah weeks" (Like today) I'll show work used as practice for current projects. It's really important to keep on top of freelancing even if it is just a sketch or color study. Every bit helps. I feel like there's just so much that I want to accomplish but without something pushing me ahead it's really difficult to finish anything. So think of your blog as a homework assignment. I also think it's very interesting to see an illustrators progress or progression.

In the next week or so I will convert back to collage for a bit while working on my latest children book. (For any illustrators/designers interested I would like to make another series of portraits! So just message me a photo if you feel compelled). I guess I got a little distracted again...well today enjoy these paintings of bedrooms I made up real quick. Im trying to avoid painting food for a bit because it was becoming too comfortable. The sketchs below are of my newest character as seen at the side of this blog (Gracie). Hopefully by next week I can also make my blog a bit more summer cheerful.

Mothers Day

I illustrated this for my mothers day card. Its just a sun holding up a tray of breakfast type things. There's kernels in the cereal so im making this an illustration friday word even if it is a bit of cheating...Starting next week my work will start speeding up and i'll show more and more of what im up to. Hopefully my newly made to-do list that's now taped to my wall will bring some organization to my life.

Two years down

I cannot tell you how odd this spring has been. I feel like whenever something chaotic happens it's always a few things at once. I have been digging my way to the bottom of the inspiration well so it's that time of year to make a new list of goals to move to the next level of my career.

It has been two years since I graduated and I feel like I have jumped to a better state of mind and style for my work. Of coarse there are many things I need to work on. Starting at the end of this month I will be meeting with a regional critique group that meets at the providence library every monday night. (Hopefully I can make a post in a month or so about what we discuss!) Aside from the cover letters and post cards, I promise I will try my very best to fix some of my spelling and grammar. Its almost ironic that I happened to choose an art field where writing is just as important as the art. YA books have also been a big interest for me. Another goal is to make a reading list of popular series out. I need to get a better idea of whats out there in that age group to help me begin my book cover illustrations. So...now that you heard my little rant here's some eye candy to look foreword too. I remade an illustration done two years from this month. Its more of a study to see how different it would look. For next week...well you should already know what that topic will be!

Lastly, I feel like I should say rest in peace Maurice Sendak. I will always remember you for your work and accomplishments in the children book community.

Jump

If frogs didn't jump they would make pizza....
